“You don’t have to know a lot of things for your life to make a lasting difference in the world. But you do have to know the few great things that matter, perhaps just one, and then be willing to live for them and die for them. The people that make a durable difference in the world are not the people who have mastered many things, but who have been mastered by one great thing.” – John Piper

The Contemplation of Labor Day

Submitted by on September 1, 2010 – 5:13 am3 Comments

- Pick up Chilean ID
- Get bus tickets to Arica
- Decide on a new word to teach
- Find 2 Spanish children’s books
- Buy wine

Today I was going through my hold calendar from when I was traveling. Something I tend to do when I have wanderlust. I want to clarify that this was not a task list on my computer, not in a blackberry, not any form of electronic madness that I am so accustomed to now. This was an old-fashioned pocket planner that I used while teaching in Chile. I actually used a pencil and wrote down my very important “to do list”.

Reading this to do list caused very immediate eye squints and the hand on the face syndrome. Imagine it something like this:

It also caused

– The jealousy of my previous self   &
- The contemplation of Labor Day

So, I thought. Who decided that we would set aside a day,    one day (this just gives me double face syndrome) to  honor  our insanely crazy work schedules. According to the US  Department of Labor – ” Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country”.

So, some of us do perhaps celebrate our Labor Day relaxing, being outdoors, or playing with our children. But, if I had to guess, there are just as many of us that will take phone calls, work on deadlines, constantly look at our continuously buzzing work emails on our smart phones, all as a part of our day of recognition. If this is you, I would urge you to take a career break, venture somewhere new, or travel to volunteer.

If your current to-do list doesn’t make you as happy as this guy……

Then turn your to do list into something that will make you smile.
