Nukanti Foundation

Nukanti - means ”us’ in the language of the Ingas of the Colombian Amazon. Chosen to represent the power we all have within us to change the fate of many disadvantaged children and youth all over the world, regardless of age or social background”

Nukanti Foundation for Children (NFC) is a non-profit organization that focuses on providing hope and healing to marginalized children affected by extreme violence. The children they work with come from backgrounds of war, abject poverty, as well as family breakdown and abuse.  Many of them live and work in the streets and have little or no access to formal education. Nukanti was founded by Niousha Roshani to help children effected by extreme violence. Currently, they have offices in the US, UK, and Colombia.

The Nukanti Organization, starting in June, is going to be my volunteer project Colombia. I am very excited to work with them as they also encourage travelers to volunteer and give back to the communities they visit. To travel and improve the lives of others!

The foundation focuses on the following initiatives for the children:

  • Promote the reintegration and inclusion of children who have been excluded, marginalized and traumatized by extreme violence and are vulnerable to recruitment by armed forces.
  • Assure their attendance and performance in school.
  • Build leadership skills and community responsibilities.
  • Keep children away from gangs, drugs and arms by offering them an alternative.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • LOCATION: Field volunteering mainly in Colombia, but there are also opportunities for specific areas of need (current needs listed below) that could be done worldwide.
  • TYPES OF VOLUNTEERS: Pro-active volunteers who have a passion for working with or on behalf of children’s advocacy. Volunteers from all cultures and professional backgrounds are accepted.
  • WHEN VOLUNTEERS ARE ACCEPTED: Year-round
  • COST OF VOLUNTEERING: There are no fees for volunteering. However, the volunteers pay or raise money for their own travel, food, and accommodation. Nukanti Foundation assists in finding the most economic accommodation, and a local person in charge of support for anything the volunteer may need.
